Dieckol-standardized Ecklonia cava

Authentic Ecklonia cava. Defined by dieckol.

Whole-thallus brown seaweed from Jeju Island, standardized to at least 0.5% dieckol and verified for identity, potency, and purity.

Know the material

Not every brown seaweed is Ecklonia cava.

The name on a specification is only useful when the species and chemistry are confirmed.

SeaEckol starts with whole-thallus Ecklonia cava, not a generic kelp substituted under a familiar name. DNA testing confirms the species. HPTLC verifies the botanical profile. Dieckol is then measured as a defined compound, not inferred from total polyphenols.

Three separate questions

Species, profile, and potency each need an answer.

  1. 01
    Is it Ecklonia cava?

DNA testing confirms the declared species.

  2. 02
Does the material look chemically right?

HPTLC compares the broader chromatographic profile.

  3. 03
    How much dieckol is present?

A compound-specific chromatographic assay quantifies dieckol against the specification.

A specification brands can use

Dieckol is measured, not assumed.

SeaEckol is standardized to at least 0.5% dieckol. That is 5mg of dieckol per gram of ingredient and at least 1.25mg in a 250mg serving.

Why dieckol?

Dieckol is one of the best-characterized phlorotannins in Ecklonia cava. Measuring it gives formulators a concrete chemical target while retaining the whole-thallus material.

Jeju Island, South Korea

Collected after the sea releases it.

SeaEckol comes from Ecklonia cava that naturally detaches and reaches the Jeju shoreline. The drift-collection model avoids cutting living kelp from protected marine forests.

01Natural detachment

Whole thalli separate from the seabed through natural coastal conditions.

02Shoreline collection

Drift material is gathered from the Jeju coast.

03Wash, dry, mill

The material is prepared as a consistent brown powder for commercial use.

Published Ecklonia cava research

Human research exists. Product equivalence still matters.

Published trials give brands a useful research foundation for Ecklonia cava and its phlorotannins. They also used different preparations, specifications, and doses.

Research scope

These studies did not evaluate SeaEckol. They support interest in the species and its phlorotannins, but they do not establish that SeaEckol is clinically equivalent to the tested materials. Finished-product claims should reflect the exact formula and the total evidence.

Body composition and lipids

97overweight adults · 12 weeks

Ecklonia cava polyphenols · 72mg or 144mg daily

The paper reported changes in anthropometric and blood-lipid measures. The study used a concentrated polyphenol preparation, not SeaEckol.

Postprandial glucose

80adults with prediabetes · 12 weeks

Dieckol-rich Ecklonia cava extract · 1,500mg daily

The trial reported a between-group difference in postprandial glucose. It evaluated a different dieckol-rich extract at a different dose.

Sleep continuity

24adults with sleep disturbance · 1 week

Separate phlorotannin supplement · 500mg before bed

Polysomnography found lower wakefulness after sleep onset. The tested supplement contained several phlorotannins, including dieckol, and was not SeaEckol.

Beyond the human trials

Dieckol has a much larger preclinical record.

Sleep pathways GABA-A receptor and sleep-architecture work in laboratory models.

Neuronal stress Cellular and animal studies on oxidative stress, apoptosis, and amyloid-related pathways.

Vascular signaling Preclinical work examining calcium signaling, nitric oxide, and endothelial responses.

Hair and skin Laboratory research related to dermal papilla activity, UV stress, and matrix pathways.

Where SeaEckol fits

Build a marine-polyphenol formula with a defined active.

SeaEckol can anchor a focused Ecklonia cava product or add a distinctive research story to a broader formula.

01

Calm and sleep

Phlorotannin research includes a small human sleep study and preclinical GABA-A work. This is the clearest consumer-facing direction.

02

Healthy metabolism

Human studies on other Ecklonia cava preparations have examined body composition, blood lipids, and postprandial glucose.

03

Brain and healthy aging

Dieckol and Ecklonia cava have been explored in preclinical models involving oxidative stress, neuronal survival, and amyloid processing.

04

Hair and skin

Preclinical studies have examined dermal papilla activity, UV-related stress, and matrix-degrading enzymes.

Evidence maturity differs by application. Human studies used other Ecklonia cava or phlorotannin preparations. Brain, hair, and skin directions rely primarily on preclinical research.

For product developers

A practical whole-seaweed ingredient for solid-dose formulas.

At a 250mg serving, SeaEckol delivers at least 1.25mg dieckol. The brown powder works most naturally in capsules and tablets. It can also be evaluated in stick packs and dry blends that can accommodate its natural color and marine botanical character.
